Jane's Walk

  • Uptown Bottle Depot 629 10 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB, T2R 0B2 Canada (map)

Our walk will be led by Calgary Bottle Pickers - this is a rare opportunity to hear about this community from members of the community! You will learn about the environmental endeavors of bottle pickers, the unspoken rules of the job, safety concerns, transit realities, stereotypes, dangers, urban planning, and finally, the positive contribution that bottle pickers make to Calgary! Beginning at the Uptown Bottle Depot parking lot, we will travel south to Hudson’s pub; here we will discuss the realities of commercial and residential bottle picking. Next we will head to Memorial Park and highlight urban planning challenges related to bottle pickers. We will continue along to the Mustard Seed and discuss challenges a homeless bottle picker could face, along with competition and safety concerns. Before returning to the Uptown Depot, we will make our way to a Calgary Transit bus stop. Here we will explore transit issues for bottle pickers, common stereotypes and discrimination. We will end back at the Uptown Depot and hear recycling and environmental impact information from Depot staff.
